SERVING IN THE MICRONESIA GUAM MISSION
"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall." -Helaman 5:12

farewell to president and sister dowdle

Dear Mom and Family:

I am still in Saipan with Elder Early, nothing really changed in Saipan zone. This is Sister Wingates last transfer and then she is done her mission!

President and Sister Dowdle came to Saipan for their last sunday of their mission! Everyone loved to see them there and there was alot of people at church yesterday! It was weird having the Mission President at church with you and I was kind of nervous, but it turned out to be interesting and fun at the same time! It was really sad though after they left. That is the last time I will ever see them on my mission but I do intend to see them after my mission if I am ever in Utah, or I will make the 15 hour drive just to see them!

I flew to Guam to attend the zone conference. It was all about being the best missionary and having a good attitude! There are some things I have to work on with that I realized! We sang a song for them (the EFY medley) and we were all almost crying at the end! President and Sister Dowdle were actually crying and the spirit was really strong at that zone conference! I took some pictures with Elder Garcia and ELder Deocampo and also the other filipinos because they all go home in Augest at the end of this transfer and I probably won't see them again. I will miss the missionaries in Guam too, we joined with the Guam zone for zone conference!

Saturday was the hardest day of my mission so far. The Zone Leaders had a baptism we were planning to attend. The night before we put some air in our tire because the light went off and then the next morning our tire lost all the air and was flat. No place was open that could replace our tire and it was raining hard. We just tried to change the tire at the church and Elder Early accidentally dropped the cell phone when we were going to ask a member to borrow his tire jack so we had to walk. We also couldn't get to the phone in the church because its in a room that we don't have a key for and so we also couldn't call anyone for help. We still had weekly planning to do because we had no time on Friday and as a result we had no prosylyting time. So that day was just the worst ever, but don't worry, we survived.

Thats so crazy about Grandma and Grandpa Kearl putting their mission papers in. They are so lucky and I am so happy for them!

I am still so happy to be in Saipan for another transfer! I love this island and I love being a missionary.

Well I know this church is true and that Heavenly Father still loves me.

I gotta go

happy father's day from micronesia

sidenote: it's a shame that missionaries don't get to phone home on father's day as well. here are a couple of my favorite pics of dan and derek. where has the time gone, this seems like just yesterday.....julie

Dear Family:

I can't believe I am almost a 1/3 done my mission. It has flown by. This week has been insane! Nciana, one of our investigators, is progressing, she knows the Book of Mormon is true and we have set a baptismal date for 23rd of July!

President Dowdle is leaving soon and my last interview with him is tomorrow at our zone conference. I am flying to Guam tomorrow to attend that. He will also be visiting Saipan for one last time on Saturday and then he goes home to Utah. So sad and so weird all at the same time! I am very sad to see President Dowdle leave and I am a little nervous about the new guy, President Mecham. I'm sure it will go well though, President Dowdle knows him he said it will be awesome! we had to make a video for President and Sister Dowdle last thursday, we each had 20 seconds to say goodbye! Transfers are this week and as always I really have no idea what is happening so we will see! I am still loving Saipan and I'm working very hard. I am so tired all the time.

I hope Dad had fun in Jasper for his conference. Happy Father's Day DAD!!!

So to answer some of your questions mom: I do remember when we went to Jasper as a family and Scott lost his Ipod and you and dad were not happy! I do like when it rains here, it feels good. Yesterday it was pouring and I was drenched because I have to go outside and help my companion when he was backing up and that was funny! I don't think I have gained any weight but I do feel my muscles growing!
Mom, thats good you are able to pick up a couple shifts on the cancer unit to keep you busy until school starts up again, that will be good for you. We are doing alright with the work, plugging along. We had like no time to do anything else this week, it felt like a gongshow, but I still loved every minute of it. I cannot wait for Zone Conference tomorrow in Guam!

Well I gotta go

mastering chuukese on his own

Hey Mom

I am fine! This week has been very fun!

Church was pretty interesting yesterday. The Gospel Principles teacher was bearing his testimony and he said "You can shoot me right now from here (not very far) and I will still testify to you that the church is true!" I thought it was very funny!

I taught a whole lesson in all chuukese though I taught very basic with very basic words so it was interesting! I loved it and we felt the sprit so strong in that lesson! Gift of tongues no doubt. I have such a testimony that it is real! I couldn't have done it without Heavenly Father! I am pretty sure the spirit was helping her understand what I was saying too and I understood what she said!

I am learning alot right now by opening up my mouth. Its really neat how we say things in english. And now I know why English is very tough to learn. man they have far less words in chuukese and so to say certain things they put words together so they can understand. For instance, if I wanted to say ressurection, I would say Manausefan which literally means life again. To say Kapasen Pwarata means testimony but it literally means Words of Revelation or reveal! Pretty neat!

I know these things are true!

If you have the church news photo or article about my new mission President could you scan and send it to me? That would be awesome, thanks.

Well I gotta go,
love ya,
c ya,

sidenote: Dan was called to micronesia guam, english speaking mission and only spent 2 1/2 weeks in the MTC. I am so proud of him for diligently learning the languages of tagalog and chuukese since he arrived in micronesia. He has so much faith and knows how to turn to the Lord to do hard things and as his mother I have always been grateful for that quality in him. I know this will help him his whole life through. Such a great person in so many ways. julie

sidenote: this is the quote I sent him today. it was from my sunday school lesson i taught today:
Before Elder Hugh B. Brown left on a mission, his mother told him:

“Hugh, you remember when you were a little boy and you would have a bad dream or wake up in the night frightened? You would call from your room, ‘Mother, are you there?’ and I would answer and try to comfort you and remove your fears. Now as you go on a mission and out into the world, there will be times when you will be frightened, when you feel weak, inadequate, alone, and have problems. I want you to know that you can call to your Heavenly Father as you used to call to me and say, ‘Father, are you there? I need your help.’ Do this with the knowledge that He is there and that He will be ready to help you if you will do your part and live worthy of your blessings. I want to reassure you that He is there and will answer your prayers and needs for your best good” (told by Marvin J. Ashton, “Know He Is There,” Ensign, Feb. 1994, 50).
